What actually counts as bad CAD?

Not every CAD file is automatically useful. We often see files that look OK at a glance, but:

  • Contain broken surfaces or open edges

  • Are poorly dimensioned or lack tolerance

  • Use non-manifold geometry (which causes printing errors)

  • Can’t be edited because they were exported incorrectly

  • Were designed without manufacturing in mind

  • Don’t match the real-world part or drawing

These issues might not show up until it’s too late — for example, when the file fails to print, or when the first prototype doesn’t fit or function.

  • What are the forces or tolerances involved?

  • Does it need to fit with other components?

  • Should it be optimised for additive manufacturing?

This is especially important if your part was designed by someone unfamiliar with 3D printing or real-world constraints.

What can’t we fix?

We’ll always be honest if a file is beyond salvage. For example:

  • If the geometry is corrupted beyond recognition

  • If there are no usable dimensions or references

  • If it’s a poor STL file with no parametric data

In those cases, we’ll give you options:

  • Start from scratch with proper CAD

  • 3D scan the physical part (if available)

  • Work with you to rebuild the design from sketches, photos or intent

What if I only have an STL file?

STL files are great for printing — but terrible for editing. They contain surface data only, with no parameters or sketches.

We can still help, but there are limits:

  • Minor edits (holes, scaling, trimming) are often possible

  • Major edits (design changes, tolerance corrections) usually require rebuilding the CAD

We’ll assess it honestly and let you know what’s possible.
