How do I know my IP is protected when sharing my files?

If you’re developing a product — whether it’s a custom bracket, a consumer device, or something entirely new — your CAD files, sketches, and models are more than just data. They’re your intellectual property (IP). And if you’re about to hand them over to a 3D printing company, that can feel… risky.

At JC3D, we understand this completely. Many of our clients are inventors, engineers, or startups working on ideas that could shape the future. Trust and protection are vital.

So let’s answer the big question: How do you know your IP is protected when you share your files with us?

What counts as your intellectual property?

In short: anything you create — from a scribbled sketch to a fully detailed 3D CAD model — belongs to you.

This includes:

  • Technical drawings

  • CAD files (STEP, STL, etc.)

  • Scans or reverse-engineered data

  • Prototypes and physical samples

  • Notes, dimensions, and design intent

And if we design something for you based on your instructions? That’s your IP too. We don’t claim ownership over your ideas.

Our approach to protecting your files

We take your intellectual property seriously. Here’s how:

1. Clear ownership policy

If you send us your own design, it remains 100% yours.
We don’t reuse, share, or showcase your files without explicit permission.

If we create the design, the CAD file remains our IP unless otherwise agreed — but you retain full usage rights for the project, and we never share it externally without your consent.

Want exclusive ownership? No problem — we can formalise that upfront.

2. Confidentiality built-in

Even before you mention an NDA, we operate under strict client confidentiality:

  • Files are stored securely

  • Only team members working directly on your project have access

  • We never discuss or share client work publicly unless permission is granted

You can also request full deletion of your files after the project.

3. We’re happy to sign NDAs

If your business or project requires a formal non-disclosure agreement, we’re more than happy to sign it.

Already have your own NDA? Send it over.

Need one from us? We’ll provide a simple, legally binding agreement that protects both parties.

4. Secure storage and retention

Files are stored in secure, access-controlled systems. Here’s our retention policy:

  • Customer-supplied designs: kept for 12 months, unless instructed otherwise

  • Designs created by JC3D: retained indefinitely for reprinting, adjustments, or repeat work

You can request deletion of files at any time.

What if you’re worried about theft or duplication?

It’s a valid concern, especially if you’re early in the development of a high-value product. Here’s how we help mitigate risk:

  • We don’t work with direct competitors without disclosure

  • We don’t subcontract design — only sanding/painting, and even that is done without exposing CAD files

  • All projects are handled in-house by trusted professionals

You’ll never find your product showing up in someone else’s portfolio or online gallery — unless you’ve asked us to showcase it.

Can you patent something after sharing it with JC3D?

Yes — and you still can after working with us, provided:

  • You haven’t made the design public

  • You retain original documentation of your idea

  • You’ve signed NDAs or have clear agreements in place

Many of our clients have successfully patented their products after we helped them with 3D CAD or prototyping.

We can even help you generate drawings or visuals for patent submissions.

What happens if there’s a dispute?

We do everything possible to prevent it — but if questions arise, here’s our process:

  • Informal first: We always aim to resolve concerns directly and quickly.

  • Written contracts or NDAs apply

  • Legal jurisdiction: We operate under UK law, which provides strong protection for IP holders.

We have never had an IP dispute, and we intend to keep it that way.

We protect your ideas like they’re our own

At JC3D, we’ve built our reputation on trust. That includes:

  • Respecting the work you’ve already done

  • Being clear about who owns what

  • Giving you confidence to move forward without fear

Whether you’re an engineer outsourcing CAD, or a start up working on a game-changing product, we’ll handle your IP with the care and confidentiality it deserves.
