How to tell if your design isn’t ready for prototyping
You have your idea. You’ve sketched it out. Maybe you even have a 3D model. You are eager to move forward and get it printed. But before you hit send on that prototype request, ask yourself this. Is your design actually ready for prototyping?

This article outlines the most common signs your design is not quite ready, and how to fix them before wasting time or money.
What does “ready for prototyping” really mean?
Being ready does not just mean having a file. It means your design is:

Clear in its purpose

Accurate in its dimensions

Printable in its geometry
-
Functional in its form

Realistic in its expectations
Many prototype failures happen not because the idea was bad, but because the design wasn’t fully developed.
Let’s look at the warning signs.
Sign 1: You haven’t defined the part’s purpose
Every prototype should serve a specific function. If you cannot answer questions like:

Is this part cosmetic, functional or both?

Does it need to fit with other components?
-
Will it experience force, stress or movement?
-
What environment will it be used in?
…then it is too soon to print. Without a clear purpose, it’s impossible to choose the right material, tolerance or geometry.
Fix it:
Write a simple one-line brief that defines what this prototype must prove or achieve. Share it with your designer or printer.
Sign 2: You don’t know how the part will be used
If your design has not been tested for real-world use, you could end up with:

Parts that snap or deform

Misaligned features
-
Interference with other components
You may not need a full FEA analysis, but you do need to consider:

Load and stress points
-
Clearance and fit
-
Ergonomics and access
Fix it:
Review your CAD model from a user or assembly perspective. Ask: “Will this work the way I need it to?”
Sign 3: Your CAD model has technical issues
Many files that look perfect on screen have hidden issues such as:

Non-manifold edges or surfaces
-
Gaps, holes or intersections
-
Walls thinner than print minimums
-
Features that are too small to print reliably
Even experienced designers can miss these. That is why we always run a pre-print analysis before going to production.
Fix it:
Use software like Netfabb or Meshmixer to run basic checks. Or send it to JC3D and we will check it for you.
Sign 4: The geometry is not optimised for printing
Your design may be technically correct, but still unprintable without heavy support, risk of warping or poor strength. Common issues include:

Large overhangs without support

Flat wide surfaces prone to curling

Tall thin parts that wobble mid-print
Fix it:
Consider print orientation, support strategy and layer bonding. If unsure, we are happy to advise or adjust the geometry for better printability.
Sign 5: You haven’t considered tolerances or fit
This is a big one. CAD dimensions are perfect. Real-world prints are not. If you are designing a part that:

Snaps, slides or clicks into another

Uses screws, bolts or pins
-
Needs to rotate, flex or pivot
…you must design with 3D printing tolerances in mind. Otherwise, your part will not fit or function.
Fix it:
Ask your printing provider for guidance on spacing, hole sizes and fit allowances. At JC3D, we tailor tolerances to your process and material.
Sign 6: The material hasn’t been selected
We often see models with no material specified. But material affects everything:

Choosing the wrong material for your design can ruin the prototype.
Fix it:
Define the intended use and we will help you choose the best material for the job. PLA is not always the answer.
Sign 7: You don’t have a version control system
Have you printed the latest version? Are you working from an old file? Has anyone renamed something “final” when it isn’t?
File version issues lead to wasted prints, unexpected results and costly rework.
Fix it:
Use a clear version naming system and communicate changes to everyone involved.
